Introduction and Concert Overview
For my concert comparison assignment, I chose to attend a symphony near my home in Wilmington, Delaware. I traveled home for a long weekend with my family, who already had tickets, to attend the live performance at the Hotel du Pont. I chose to travel home and attend this performance rather than one closer to school because I got a chance to spend valuable time with my parents at something they really enjoy going to see and this was the first time I tagged along with them. I chose to see a symphony over the other choices of performances due to the fact that I have never seen one before. After exploring our modules and learning about symphonies in this class, it drew my interest and I decided to see one for myself first hand. The performance took place on February 18th at the Hotel du Pont in the Gold Ballroom. We were there to see “An Evening of Strings with the Mendelssohn’s”. Felix Mendelssohn piece that he composed was going to be performed by the Delaware Symphony Orchestra. The venue was beautiful and the Hotel du Pont is a very elegant place. The ballroom is gorgeous and gold trim and theme of the room made the night very memorable and one to remember. I have been to the Hotel du Pont only for banquets and high school events, however, this was the first time I attended a live concert at the the Hotel. The gigantic chandelier hanging from the ceiling and the magnificent trim around the walls is what I remember most vividly. I could sense the performance was going to be amazing from the second we sat down and the next two sections of this blog are going to show two pieces of music (with two YouTube videos of each) that I felt the most connected to. Felix Mendelssohn – Elijah
I chose Elijah as one of my pieces of music from the live performance that I attended for one main reason. The singing in the piece was unlike any I have seen before. The piece of music is extremely long in the clips I found on YouTube, however, at the live performance they only played…
Felix Mendelssohn – A Midsummer Night’s Dream (A Collection of Songs)
A Midsummer Night’s Dream was an amazing performance to see live. The collection of pieces were composed by Felix Mendelssohn and played by the Delaware Symphony Orchestra. It was amazing to see so many moving parts come together to make such an impressive work of art sound so flush and beautiful. In the audience there…
